The Church of England Children’s Society

The Children’s Society is founded on a Christian vision and driven by Christian values

The Society every year provides services and support through over 70 projects to around 50,000 children whose needs are otherwise ignored, overlooked or neglected. The project work, supported by money raised in parishes and elsewhere, in turn informs our research and our campaigns to change systems and attitudes so that all children can benefit.

To extend its understanding of childhood as it now is, the Society commissioned an independent inquiry on Good Childhood. The report published by Penguin in February analyses research by leading experts and also draws upon submissions by over 20,000 children.

The Inquiry makes recommendations on what action to take to improve the nature of childhood in a society that it sees as being plagued by excessive individualism.

Fundraising for the Society

Volunteers are the cornerstone of our work. Without your generous support, we could only reach a fraction of the children we currently help each year. Your hard work and dedication gives us the freedom to concentrate our work where the need is greatest, not just in areas where government funding is available. Together we can give countless children the vital help and support they cannot find anywhere else. Together, we can give them back their childhood.

Two of the most popular ways of raising money is by Christingle activities where the Society can help by providing materials (download to get details) and by House collecting boxes where small change makes a large change. By having a box in their homes which is opened annually by a Parish Co-ordinator people all over the country raise £2 million pounds each year.. But there are all sorts of other ways in which you can raise money, and the Fundraising download.

Sprotbrough St Mary’s and St Edmund’s Support Group

Last year the two Society Support Groups in the parish merged into one, and built on the work that they had previously done separately. Since 1988 the two groups have raised between them £114,000 to support the ongoing work of the Society.
