On Monday 15th February 2010, and for the first time in living memory, a popular local landmark will have its appearance dramatically changed. Most of the St Mary’s Church building in Sprotbrough is to be encased in scaffolding. “Why?” you ask. Well, it marks the start of Phase 1 of the very essential repairs to the roof. This has only been made possible through the generosity of so many people with over £150,000 now raised towards the Roof Appeal. A raised roof will be erected to cover the badly damaged one and enable work to be undertaken.
The Rector, Rev John Richards, and others at St Mary’s wanted to mark this unique occasion with a simple ceremony of Dedication and HUGE thanks. So at 11 am on Friday 12th February at St Mary’s Church you are invited to attend to be part of this. Representatives of the three local schools have been invited, along with the architect and builders.
It will not be necessary to close the Church immediately and so it will be business as usual for a while. As work progresses, and it is deemed essential to vacate the Church, worship will take place in the beautifully refurbished Church Hall on Main Street, Sprotbrough for a while.
It is hoped that further phases of repair work will be able to commence following Phase 1 providing further funds are available. The Roof Appeal will remain open until the cost of all work is covered.
